Skeptical Lizard

Skeptical Lizard

My family came across this little guy while visiting the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, Arizona. I think he was as curious about us as we were about him. He kept peeking around the edge of the tree he was hiding on. I must have looked quite odd to him as I tried to capture his image. I had a baby strapped to myself in a carrier and I kept lifting the camera to my face and then lowering it again, as I was walking toward him, trying to get as close as possible before he ran away. Then again, maybe the lifting and lowering of the camera was what he was imitating, as he would slide out of view and then back in, sort of like a game of peek-a-boo. I think he is a Western Fence Lizard or Sceloporus occidentalis, they are sometimes referred to as blue-bellies as well, I guess we can see why that is.
