MetalSentinals

MetalSentinals

I really enjoy the symmetry of these metal pilings on the shorefront of Fullerton Beach in Chicago, Illinois. They stand as silent sentinals, protecting the beach from erosion and Lake Shore Drive from water surges. There used to be wooden pile cribs filled with stones in this area, but they rotted over time, partially due to record low water levels in1964 ,where they received too much sun exsposure. These metal pilings are part of the Chicago Shoreline Protection Project. I like how the past water levels show as lines on the pilings as a record of the past and yet they are there to protect the present and future.
